Fortnite, A New Gaming Hope

Christmas 1997. My father was coming back from an overseas trip. Little did I know I was about to play my first video game: 007 GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64.
There has been a select amount of video games which many of us consider to be personal "life-changers". 41 days into this year, 2018 has given us a new, fresh breath: Fortnite

Fortnite is a free, online, third-person shooter released by Epic Games in July 2017. Eight months later, the game, which is still in early access, has turned into one of the most popular video games in the industry with over 45 million players

What makes Fortnite successful?

Responsiveness. Since the game launched, Epic Games has kept us posted throughout different social media platforms such as Twitter, Reddit, Youtube, Facebook, you name it. Not only have they kept us informed, but their developers respond to our suggestions.

Cross-Play. PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4 users can all play in the same servers, at the same time, with each other. This past weekend, I was able to play on my Playstation 4 with my cousin who is using a computer from Peru. How great is that?

Access. The game is free. Sure, there are in-game purchases we can make to buy cosmetic items, but they do not enhance or improve individual performance. Epic Games have stated that they intend to keep Fortnite and its upcoming game content free. In times where most brand new video games are about 60 USD, this is remarkable.

Community. With a growing player base of 45 million, the Fortnite community is becoming stronger. There are thousands of live streamers and viewers every day. While there is no detailed information about the demographics of the Fortnite community, I can tell you that I was playing with my 29 year old cousin as well as my 12 year old cousin and his friend.

Fortnite has found its place in the gaming world. Epic Games has done an excellent job at developing the game by making us, the community, the game's main focus.

We feel the same sensation that we felt when we first played Halo 3 all night. We feel the same sensation that we felt when we first walked around Lumbridge in Runescape. We feel the same sensation that we felt when we jumped from the ventilation shaft into the bathroom in Goldeneye 64's Facility

We feel Fortnite.

    2. Hi Stefan, I thought your post about the gaming community was a fine example of "communities" from our Groundswell readings. I had no idea these free games exist as I'm not much of a gamer. It is cool that you can connect with people like yourself all over the world in the online gaming community.

  2. Hey Stefan,

Really interesting post! I also play games on my PS4 sometime, and now I'm planning to buy a Nintendo Switch (this year hopefully). It's pretty sad that gamers in China could not access to most of game consoles or PC games until the beginning of this decade, so we never have the chance to play games on Nintendo 64 or Saturn or PS1/PS2. I kinda like those retro, pixel-style games. To me, they have some unique attractiveness that no video games today have.

Welcome to Tambo

Did you, growing up, have a small corner store that you loved going to? In 2015, in Peru, the concept of corner stores or bodegas    was forever revolutionized: Tambo  came to life. In case you were wondering, the word Tambo, which comes from the Quechua language , was an Incan structure that contained several supplies. Taking this into a 21st-century scenario, the founders of the Tiendas Tambo    have adapted the original definition into a chain of convenience stores like 7-11 , currently running in Lima, Peru. Just to provide you with a little context , convenience stores in Lima have kept a traditional, old-school vibe.  It is common for families and individuals to go to the small corner store in the block and buy some daily products. At the same time, big and medium-sized supermarkets have grown and made their way into the market, especially in the past 20 years. This enduring change in the supermarket industry in Lima, Peru, and in other South Ameri

A Controversial 2018 Start For Social Media

Ah…2018. A new year for social media. New posts, new tweets, new videos, new pictures, new comments. The truth is, this year has started with a controversial, Black Mirroresque bang for us social media users. On January 1st, 2018, while we were saying goodbye to 2017 and welcoming 365 new days, Youtube User Logan Paul posted a video on Youtube that will forever be remembered as "one of those moments" in social media and most likely history. I am not here to comment on the content of the video, provide Logan's life story, or tell you about how disgusted I was when I learned about it. However, the difference in approaches and ways in which social media users responded to the video should be brought to our attention. On one hand, and perhaps the most surprising, several users across social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram spoke in defense of Logan Paul, noting that people make mistakes and that the intentions behind the video were misinterp

(Social Media Monitoring Presentation Pt. 1) Avenged Sevenfold and The Stage

Background "It’s pretty much completely aggro. It goes in all sorts of aggressive directions and melodic directions". This was one of the first times that a member of Avenged Sevenfold commented on  The Stage  back in December 2015.  On October 28, 2016, under almost unpredictable circumstances, the band revealed The Stage  to the world. Avenged Sevenfold, also known as A7x, is a Heavy Metal band that started back in 1999 in California.  To this date, A7x has released seven studio albums , with The Stage  being their latest release. Setting up The Stage From a marketing perspective, The Stage  is Avenged Sevenfold's product.  What made this product release stand out was its departure from a traditional album release style . A7x decided to release The Stage   almost unexpectedly , without giving many details prior to its release. "We just really didn't tell anyone, we didn't tell family members, or good friends, we just.
